What's actually behind the appetite drop
FortiFlora doesn't have a known mechanism for suppressing appetite. The active strain doesn't release compounds that affect hunger signaling. So when a dog eats less after starting it, the cause is almost always one of three things — and none of them require stopping the supplement permanently.
Cause 1: The flavor is too intense
FortiFlora is heavily flavored with hydrolyzed pork liver and poultry digest. For most dogs this makes the supplement extremely palatable — they treat it like a food topper. For a minority, the flavor is so strong it changes the smell of the whole meal, and they back off because the food doesn't smell like their food anymore.
Picky dogs and dogs with previous food sensitivities seem to react this way more than others. Border Collies, Shelties, and other breeds that tend toward food selectivity show this pattern more often.
Fix: Start with a quarter packet for the first three days, then half packet for days 4-6, then full packet from day 7 onward. The slower introduction lets the dog get used to the flavor as a normal part of the meal rather than a sudden assault.
Cause 2: Mild GI adjustment
Some dogs eat less for a day or two while their gut is recolonizing. The pattern is: normal food intake → starts FortiFlora → eats 60-70% of normal for 1-2 days → back to full intake by day 3-4. They're not refusing food, just less interested.
This is the same adjustment phase that produces mild gas in some dogs. The body's signaling system temporarily downregulates appetite while the gut is busy with the microbiome shift.
Fix: Wait it out. Keep offering meals on the normal schedule. Don't switch to a more enticing food to compensate — that adds another variable. If your dog is still drinking water and acting otherwise normal, eating 60-70% of normal for two days isn't dangerous.
Cause 3: Coincidence
Dogs reduce food intake for many reasons unrelated to supplements: weather changes, dental discomfort, anxiety, mild illness, season (intact females in heat eat less, intact males near a female in heat may stop eating entirely), or just personal preference. If you started FortiFlora the same week your dog has another reason to eat less, the supplement gets the blame.
Fix: Look at the bigger picture. Was there a thunderstorm yesterday? New tooth issue? Recent vaccination? If anything else changed in the same window, it might be that, not the FortiFlora.
Workarounds that usually solve it
Mix into wet food. Wet food has its own strong smell that masks the FortiFlora flavor for sensitive dogs.
Add the supplement separately as a "treat." Open the packet over a single tablespoon of plain yogurt or canned pumpkin and offer it as a separate course before or after the meal. The dog associates the strong flavor with a small portion rather than the entire dinner.
Warm the food slightly. Lukewarm food (not hot) is more aromatic and often gets reluctant dogs eating again. Just 10 seconds in the microwave with kibble or 30 seconds for wet food.
Reduce the dose temporarily. If your dog is eating less, half a packet for a few days is still therapeutically useful for most situations. It's better than dropping the supplement entirely or having the dog skip meals.
When the appetite loss isn't from FortiFlora
Stop blaming the supplement if any of these are also true:
- Lethargy alongside the food refusal. Just eating less is mild. Eating less plus sleeping more, hiding, or seeming uncomfortable is a sign something else is going on.
- Vomiting in the same window. Vomiting plus appetite loss is a GI issue that needs evaluation, not a supplement question.
- Weight loss visible at home. A day of eating less doesn't show on the scale. If you can see weight loss in a few days, something more is happening.
- Refusal of treats and high-value foods too. A dog refusing FortiFlora-laced food but happily eating cheese isn't reacting to the supplement — they're being selective. A dog refusing cheese has something else going on.
- Food refusal past 48 hours. Most adjustment-related appetite reduction resolves within two days. Longer than that and the supplement isn't the issue.
When to call your vet
- Complete food refusal for more than 24 hours (puppies) or 48 hours (adult dogs)
- Food refusal plus vomiting, lethargy, or fever
- Visible weight loss alongside reduced eating
- Refusal of even high-value treats
- A puppy under 4 months not eating for 12+ hours
- Pre-existing conditions where appetite matters (diabetes, kidney disease, recovering from surgery)
For mild appetite reduction in an otherwise healthy dog, this almost always self-corrects within 3-4 days. The slow introduction approach prevents it entirely in most cases.
